    Summary:
According to McLean Harvard Medical School, African American adults are 20% more likely to experience serious psychological distress and have feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and lack of worth than adult whites. Supporting research also validates that African Americans living at or below the poverty index are three times more likely to experience psychological distress, while understanding those numbers reflect only those willing to report their experiences. Unfortunately, mental Health Stigma has plagued the African American community for far too long. Join us as we discuss the barriers and engage in an open, honest, and transparent dialog about how we can begin empowering communities to prioritize mental health.

    Objectives:
    1. Raise awareness of mental health stigma in the African American Community and the negative implications.
    2. Discuss and understand the barriers to mental health care in the African American Community.
    3. Discuss strategies that reduce mental health stigma from within the African American Community.
    4. Raise awareness and recommend how to improve African Americans’ engagement in mental health services by using Emotionally-Inclusive Practices in clinical mental health professionals’ workspaces and alike.
