The ASPIN Opioid Impacted Family Support Program (AOIFSP) expands ASPIN’s existing para-professional certificate program for Community Health Workers (CHW) by the addition of an Opioid Impacted Family Support certificate. CCHWs will better understand the specific needs of providing services to children whose parents are impacted by opioid use disorders (OUD) and other substance use disorders (SUD), and their family members who are in guardianship roles.
The project is accomplished with ASPIN and three Community Mental Health Centers: Centerstone, Four County, and Hamilton Center who serve the targeted population to where they will recruit CHWs in 10 rural and underserved Indiana counties – Boone, Brown, Cass, Clark, Hancock, Jackson, Marion, Randolph, Vermillion, & Wayne – to enter the behavioral health/primary care workforce or continue to college seeking an advanced degree in human services to support families & children who are dealing with OUD/SUD.
How the Program Works:
There are six components to the AOIFSP certification training.
I. Core CHW Certification: Students will attend the State of Indiana, Office of Medicaid Policy & Planning (OMPP) certified 20+ hour Certified Community Health Worker (CHW) core online training program.
II. Opioid Basics for CHWs: Students will then receive an additional 12+ hours online addictions related training.
III. Opioid Impacted Family Support: Students will then receive an additional 6+ hours online opioid impacted family support training.
IV. Chronic Care Paraprofessional: Students will then receive an additional 23+ hours online chronic conditions related training.
V. Field Placement: Students will then complete an 8-hour in-person field placement with a Community Mental Health Center OR a virtual field placement OR receive job experience credit.
VI. Apprenticeship: Students will enter the Department of Labor certified CHW apprentice program for one year. The Project Coordinator will work with the student to seek employment as a CCHW in a high need and high demand area.
“This project: ‘ASPIN Opioid Impacted Family Support Program (AOIFSP)’. is supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as partof a financial assistance award totaling $600,000.00 with 0% percentage funded by non-government sources. Goal 1: To enhance the existing Indiana CCHW Paraprofessional Certificate Program by developing a new OUD/SUD and Impacted Families curriculum concentration for the CCHW program. ASPIN will enroll an average of 25 Level One candidates per year for 4 years in AOIFSP.
Goal 2: AOIFSP will partner with Community Mental Health Centers, the Department of Workforce Development, Community based Organizations, and Domestic Abuse & Other Shelters to enhance community recruitment efficiency and increase hiring entity relationships for CCHWs trained to support opioid effected families. The program will seek to recruit individuals and groups from different racial, ethnic, cultural, geographic, religious, linguistic, and class backgrounds, and different genders and sexual orientations.
Goal 3: In the first 12 months of the award, ASPIN will create the first Department of Labor certified CHW apprentice program in the State of Indiana. We will work with key partners for both recruitment and placement of apprentices.
