    Description: In this seminar, Dr. Duarte-Velez will provide an overview of issues impacting the LGBTQ+ Latinx/Hispanic youth mental health, including disparities and social stigma. She will provide self-reflection exercises to address our own prejudices and discuss strategies to promote affirmative care in counseling. Additionally, she will provide some ideas about how to approach caregivers that are struggling on understanding/accepting their child sexual orientation or gender identity.

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
    At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
    1. Identify their own prejudices/bias toward the LGBTQ+ youth community.
    2. Explain the rationale for using culturally relevant affirmative care.
    3. Name two strategies they can use in counseling to reduce stigma toward the LGBTQ+ youth. 4. Name two strategies they can use with LGBTQ+ youth caregivers to increase understanding

    INSTRUCTOR CREDENTIALS: Yovanska Duarte-Velez, PhD received her PhD from the University of Puerto Rico and is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University and Bradley Hospital. Dr. Duarté-Vélez is also a bilingual licensed clinical psychologist with extensive experience with children and families from diverse backgrounds. She directs Mi Gente Program, an evidence base program providing therapy for Latinx youth with mood disorders and trauma in Rhode Island. Her work has focused on the assessment and treatment of Latinx youth with suicidal behaviors in the context of their family and society. Currently, she is conducting a randomized clinical trial to test the efficacy and effectiveness of the Socio-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Suicidal Behaviors (SCBT-SB) funded by the National Institute on Minority and Health Disparities. She has provided training to clinicians, teachers, gatekeepers, and caregivers in diverse topics related to prevention, assessment, and treatment of mental health. Also, she serves as consultant for other research projects in the areas of diversity and inclusion.
