This presentation will address historical and current factors contributing to stigma and reducing mental health help seeking among African American men. Strategies for engaging African Men in mental health treatment will also be discussed including: pre-treatment engagement strategies, creating a welcoming environment for African American men; engagement within the first 10 minutes of contact; use of stories of other African American men. Emphasis will also be placed upon increasing the representation of African American men as staff in the behavioral healthcare system to help reduce stigma and increase client engagement.Objectives:
• Articulate 3 historical and 3 current factors contributing to mental health stigma among African American men.
• Utilize 3 strategies for reducing mental health stigma among African American men.
• Create a welcoming environment for African American men seeking mental health services.
• Develop a reputation as a program that works well with African American men as clients.
• Utilize 3 strategies for increasing African American representation as staff in behavioral health care settings.Speaker Bio:
Mark Sanders, LCSW, CADC is an international speaker in behavioral health whose presentations have reached thousands throughout the United States, Europe, Canada, West Indies, and Guam.
