Summary: This 90-minute presentation aims to provide a comprehensive overview of Serious Mental Illness (SMI), focusing on the impact of stigma and strategies for promoting mental health resilience within diverse communities. This presentation will delve into the complexities of SMI, its prevalence, and the pervasive effects of stigma on individuals and communities. Attendees will gain insights into evidence-based interventions, support systems, and community engagement strategies to foster understanding and reduce the burden of SMI. Participants will be able to apply trauma-informed and culturally responsive approaches through a case vignette.

Objectives: By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

• Define and differentiate between various Serious Mental Illnesses, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
• Analyze the impact of stigma on individuals with SMI and their willingness to seek help, with a focus on how stigma manifests within different communities.
• Identify cultural factors that influence the perception of mental illness and contribute to disparities in accessing mental health services, particularly in BIPOC communities.
• Apply trauma-informed and culturally responsive approaches when working with individuals with SMI, recognizing the potential sources of trauma and strategies for minimizing re-traumatization.
